2023 was a tricky year, it was the last year of the La Nina so it was cooler and wetter than normal. Thus making it challenging to mitigate disease but we were fortunate not to have any problems. The reds are typically more fruit forward from this year with less tannin, easy to drink straight out of the bottle, which is not a bad thing. On the other hand the chardonnays cropped very low due to the poor conditions, so acidity is up and so is complexity. I think they will need a bit of time, but they look good already. Overall I am very happy considering the challenging vintage, but it is just a lot harder to grow and make them!
2023 Pinot Noir is a blend of barrels, the fruit comes off the Stefano Lubiana Granton Estate Vineyard with 20% of the fruit coming off the Close Planted Vineyard (high up on the western side of the estate planted in 2019 1.3HA). The Close Planted block I grow on my own and this is the first vintage I am using the fruit. The remaining 80% is from older estate vines, off both soil types (clay and gravel). There is a lower level of whole bunch (30%) due to the year. 1 full year in 228L barrels. Bottled onsite unfiltered. From certified biodynamic vineyards. Compared to the 2022, the 2023 is more drinkable on release, tannins are smoother and the fruit is more fresh and crunchy but with intensity.
